Plastic recycling has become big business globally with corporates clambering to realize the marketing potential of a pro-green message .For example by 2010,the US-based Coca-Cola wants its bottles made in Europe to be made with 25% recycled polyethylene terephthalate(PET)-a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family .It has similar plans for India(see box).PET is used in synthetic fibers;beverage, food and other liquid containers; thermoforming applications etc.
Off all the plastics, PET is the easiest to recycle, and the most common..Recycling of PET bottles is the activity whereby bottles made out of PET are collected, sorted and processed in order to reuse the material out of which they are made.In many countries,PET plastics are coded with the number 1 which is found inside the universal recycling symbol, usually located on the bottom of the container.PET is used as a raw material for making packing materials such as bottles and containers which are used for packing a wide range of food products and other consumer goods.
Examples include soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, detergents, cosmetics, pharmaceuticalproducts and edible oils.
