Plastic recycling has become big business globally with corporates clambering to realize the marketing potential of a pro-green message .For example by 2010,the US-based Coca-Cola wants its bottles made in Europe to be made with 25% recycled polyethylene terephthalate(PET)-a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family .It has similar plans for India(see box).PET is used in synthetic fibers;beverage,food and other liquid containers; thermoforming applications etc.

Off all the plastics, PET is the easiest to recycle,and the most common..Recycling of PET bottles is the activity whereby bottles made out of PET are collected,sorted and processed in order to reuse the material out of which they are made.In many countries,PET plastics are coded with the number 1 which is found inside the universal recycling symbol,usually located on the bottom of the container.PET is used as a raw material for making packing materials such as bottles and containers which are used for packing a wide range of food products and other consumer goods.

Examples include soft drinks,alcoholic beverages,detergents,cosmetics,pharmaceuticalproducts and edible oils.

What are the advantages of rPET compared to virgin material?

   By using good recycling equipment,rPET is more or less equal with virgin PET.So rPET could be used for the same high quality products instead of producing and using new virgin material.For our environment,this means we will get the same result with less energy and pollution.

What process is used to recycle PET?

   This depends on the final use.For technical applications normally a washing line for PET post consumer bottle is used.As a result of this process,one receives clean and dry high quality flakes,which could be reused in most production line.For bottle to bottle or special products,the washed PET flakes are re-palletised after the washing line.The results are clean,filtrated rPET pallets.For bottle to bottle,the washing line is very often equipped with an acid stage to achieve highest possible cleanliness in combination with ultra friction washer for a mechanical surface peeling.
